The Trip to Ghana

The six-week trip to Ghana was generally successful though with some challenges.

Week 1: Stayed in Accra waiting to clear a car at the port
Week 2: Still in Accra for the car and getting more frustrated than ever. During the week I received a delegation from Mac's Vision organization from Agona Swedru. On the following Friday, I was at the Tema port with Kay at 8 am and finally got out at 8 pm. The windshield was smashed with dents all over the hood. Another car in the shipping container above mine had sagged into it causing the damage. Well, finally we were riding in the car. On the following Saturday, we were on our way to Kumasi, the Garden City of West Africa.
Week 3: Had a rare opportunity to be introduced to the Asantehene, Otumfour Osei Tutu II at his Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
Week 4: Got the chance to be with family members and to express my appreciation for standing in for me during the death, burial and funeral of my older sister Amankwaa. Seized the opportunity to visit nearby junior high and senior high schools. Very exciting to know what is happening in these schools.
Week 5: Had a meeting with authorities at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) on investment opportunities in the city. Suddenly bumped into owners of a school property, junior high school, that is on the decline and want somebody to manage and revamp it. was arrested by a combined force of police and the military for driving in the night in a DV registered number plate. The law doesn't allow cars using the DV plate on the roads and streets after 6 pm until they are fully registered. I was not allowed to go until I parted with some money. Hmmmmmmmm!
Week 6: A couple of meetings more with the school owners and the leadership of the Mac's Vision organization at Agona Swedru before arriving in Accra on Sunday night. Come Wednesday, June 26 and I was on my way back to the U.S.
On Transit at JFK in NY: Arriving at 4:45 am  and not leaving until 3:45 pm, I had plenty of time to spend at the airport. Spent some time sending mails to friends and colleagues around especially in Ghana. I met a recent Harvard grad Z. S. for about half an hour before parting.
